South Dakota Mesothelioma

The Centers for Disease Control report that 104 residents of South Dakota died from mesothelioma between 1999 to 2015. While not as common as in other states, South Dakota had several oil refineries including the American Oil Refinery, BP Amoco, and Standard Oil. Unfortunately, many workers have been exposed to asbestos at these locations.

There are two natural amphibole deposits of asbestos located along South Dakota's western border as well as another site close to the Jewel National Cave. There are also several former asbestos mines and three natural asbestos deposits in the state. Additionally, many pieces of construction material including wall boards and floor tiles still contain asbestos. As a result, it is common for South Dakota residents to come into contact with asbestos. Left untouched, asbestos is not dangerous. If disturbed, however, asbestos fibers can come loose and when inhaled, can end up lodged in the linings of a person’s internal organs.
