The Centers for Disease Control report that 104 residents of South Dakota died from mesothelioma between 1999 to 2015. Workers who are employed in the agriculture, power plant, and education industries in the state are at an elevated risk of being diagnosed with mesothelioma. Most people in the state, however, come into interaction with asbestos on a frequent basis.
Asbestos Exposure at South Dakota Power PlantsBefore the dangers of asbestos exposure were widely known, the material was placed in numerous pieces of equipment found at power plants, including turbines and tanks. Some of the power plants in the state where workers are known to have been exposed to asbestos include the following:
- Angus Anson Power Plant
- Big Stone Power Plant
- Pathfinder Power Plant
For many years, missile silos in South Dakota were constructed with asbestos. As a result, construction workers as well as military members and civilians who lived close to the silos were exposed to dangerous asbestos.
Asbestos Exposure at South Dakota Oil RefineriesWhile not as common as in other states, South Dakota had several oil refineries including the American Oil Refinery, BP Amoco, and Standard Oil. Unfortunately, many workers have been exposed to asbestos at these locations.
South Dakota Residents are at Risk of Asbestos ExposureThere are two natural amphibole deposits of asbestos located along South Dakota's western border as well as another site close to the Jewel National Cave. There are also several former asbestos mines and three natural asbestos deposits in the state. Additionally, many pieces of construction material including wall boards and floor tiles still contain asbestos. As a result, it is common for South Dakota residents to come into contact with asbestos. Left untouched, asbestos is not dangerous. If disturbed, however, asbestos fibers can come loose and when inhaled, can end up lodged in the linings of a person’s internal organs.
