Man’s Mesothelioma Linked to Asbestos in Talc Used for Pleurodesis

For purposes of this article, the mesothelioma victim in this case will be referred to as Mr. B.Z.

In this case, a Utah resident, Mr. B.Z. Claims that his mesothelioma was caused by talc pleurodesis, a procedure that was meant to help him. Talc pleurodesis is a medical procedure that helps prevent fluid or air from accumulating in the pleural cavity. This medical procedure is for patients with respiratory issues such as malignant pleural mesothelioma. Many people have and continue to benefit from talc pleurodesis. Unfortunately, for B.Z., a procedure that was supposed to help him ended up causing him harm. According to Mr. B.Z., the talc used during his treatments in 2014 and 2020 resulted in him developing mesothelioma.

Over the years, many ovarian cancer and malignant mesothelioma patients have filed lawsuits against manufacturers and suppliers of cosmetic and industrial talc. These individuals have blamed these companies for acting negligently by failing to warn people about the presence of asbestos in their products and for distributing unsafe goods that can cause several health issues.

In Mr. B.Z.’s case, the talc was administered around his left lung during two separate talc pleurodesis procedures in 2014 and 2020. B.Z. was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma, the most common type of mesothelioma, in September of 2021. Medical exams revealed that most of his lower lobe surface and the posterior parietal pleura, pericardial, and diaphragmatic surfaces were covered with talc aggregations. These results indicate that Mr. B.Z.’s malignant mesothelioma was directly linked to the talc used on him.

B.Z.’s lawsuit names several companies as defendants, including Boston Medical Products Inc., Lymol Medical Corporation, and Amerilure, Inc. These companies are involved in various stages of the asbestos-contaminated talc supply chain, from mining to testing to packaging, marketing, and supplying. According to the lawsuit, these companies failed in their duty to exercise reasonable care and provide enough warnings about the dangers associated with their talc products.

Mr. B.Z.’s illness has impacted him in many ways. Since his diagnosis, he has incurred substantial medical expenses, and the quality of his life has dramatically reduced. His mesothelioma has also impacted his life expectancy and caused him physical and mental pain and suffering. Mr. B.Z.’s lawsuit seeks compensation for all these damages. Additionally, his family is also seeking compensation for the loss of, among other things, services, care, protection, companionship, assistance, and guidance.

This case highlights the serious consequences of asbestos exposure, even in medical settings. When companies fail to exercise reasonable care, there can be significant risks associated with the products used in the treatment. Unfortunately, patients may not know the dangers associated with seemingly non-threatening substances, resulting in devastating consequences, like in the case of Mr. B.Z. Strict regulation and thorough testing of medical materials can go a long way in ensuring healthcare providers are equipped with effective and safe tools. Patients can also do their part by, among other things, advocating for transparency and safety in medical treatment and asking questions about treatment to ensure they are well-informed and protected.
