Asbestos in Battleships
Below you will find a list of U.S. Navy battleships that are known to have contained asbestos at some point in time. As a result, U.S. Navy sailors as well as other workers were exposed to asbestos and are now at an increased risk of being diagnosed with several deadly types of cancer, including mesothelioma.
How Asbestos Exposure Occurs on BattleshipsThere was a substantial amount of asbestos used on Navy battleships over the years as heat insulation. Due to the damp conditions on ships, however, the asbestos located on most battleships broke down and its fibers became inhaled by anyone in the proximity of the ship. Many people were exposed to asbestos while replacing damaged areas of insulation.
Furthermore, much of the machinery and piping that were used on battleships were insulated with asbestos, which created another risk of exposure for anyone that lived or worked on the Naval vessels. Because there is little ventilation on battleships, crews often inhaled asbestos fibers that remained in the air.
